The South Branch of the Potomac River is noted as one of the best trout streams. If you are interested in hunting for your pastime, deer, bear, and turkey seem to be plentiful in the area. Other activities in the area include bird watching, botanical exploration, spelunking and hiking, canoeing, horse back riding, golf, mountain biking, auctions and antiquing. For the sightseers there are many areas to explore. Only minutes away are Smoke Hole Canyon, Smoke Hold Caverns, Spruce Knob, Seneca Caverns, Dolly Sods, and Blackwater Falls. Within a couple hours one could be in Cass riding on the Cass Scenic Railroad or checking out the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green bank.
Or if all of this sounds to hectic, simply sit back on one of the deck chairs with a good book until the stars come out. Then enjoy the sounds of nature. You will never experience a more relaxing time.
Pendleton County - Created from parts of Augusta, Hardy and Rockingham Counties in 1788, this area was named in honor of Edmund Pendleton, a Virginia statesman and jurist. Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia, is located here at an elevation of 4,861 feet. Seneca Rocks, part of the Monongahela National Forest, offers excellent rock climbing opportunities. Two Indian massacres occurred in 1758 at Fort Upper Tract and Fort Seybert when the Indians were led by the Shawnee Chieftain Kilbuck. Franklin, the county seat, is home to the Treasure Mountain Festival. The fair incorporates the 200-year legend of buried treasure being hidden in the nearby hills.
